Initial Visit

What to Expect

Please make sure that your pet’s medical records are provided to us prior to your exam, in order for us to carefully review and familiarize ourselves with your pet’s medical history.

Here’s what you need to know.

We schedule 60 to 90 minutes for the initial exam and meeting, so that we can then perform our own detailed medical history intake and clarify your primary concerns and treatment goals. It is important to us that our patients feel comfortable at our clinic. We take our time to allow for slower, gentler handling and lower stress for your cherished pets.

This time also allows for a thorough conventional medical exam as well as a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) exam. This includes pulse and tongue analysis, spinal manipulative therapy (if necessary), and acupressure or acupuncture. Acupressure or acupuncture are included in the initial exam, since they are an integral diagnostic tool, as well as treatment.

One of the central evaluation tools in TCM is pulse analysis. In animals, the femoral pulse is checked for abnormalities in multiple parameters (depth, tone, strength, width), - not just rate. The pulse character, along with the physical exam and history, help the clinician determine a TCM pattern. When active/relevant acupuncture points are stimulated appropriately, an immediate change in the pulse character results. When clinicians include active points into their assessment, it allows the patient to give immediate feedback and helps ensure that the TCM, and therefore any herbal prescriptions, are more accurate to the individual.

We will then discuss any recommended herbs, medications, diet alterations, physical medicine, or lifestyle changes in order to arrive at a treatment plan that fits your goals, preferences, and personal circumstances. Any herbal or conventional medications, homeopathy, or supplements will be charged in addition to the exam cost.

Together, we will decide on the best choice and timing for follow-up, whether by email, phone, or recheck examination.

Ongoing Holistic Care

Follow-up visits will be tailored to your pet’s needs, as determined during the initial consultation and discussion with the veterinarian. Our goal is to ensure that your pet’s personalized holistic treatment plan is effective not only in the short-term but also for the long-term management of their specific health condition(s). Integrative follow-up care provides the opportunity to adjust the treatment plan based on any changes in your pet’s health, and includes ongoing maintenance, particularly when acupuncture or other manual therapies are recommended.
